On May 26, 2006, Abner Bobo, Carol Bobo and Russ Walker submitted over 110,335 signatures to the Secretary of State in support of their initiative to amend the Oregon Constitution. The amendment would require the election of Supreme Court and Court of Appeals Judges by legislatively created districts. There will be seven districts for Supreme Court elections and five for Court of Appeals elections. Candidates must have lived in their district for at least a year. Sitting judges are grandfathered in, but will be assigned a district, and must meet residency requirements in order to run for reelection.
Oh, in the preamble, the amendment calls itself the "Judicial Accountability Act."
The Secretary of State is verifying the submitted signatures. The Chief Petitioners need 100,840 to get to the ballot. Stay tuned to see if they make it.
More details about the initiative can be found at the Secretary of State website.
